Sokoto state government and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are working closely towards the feasibility of raising ranches and grazing reserves in parts of the state so as to improve livestock farming and curtail the preponderance of banditry and sundry crimes arising therefrom. This was part of the take-always from a meeting Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state and a team of his Commissioners had with the management of the AfDB, led by the President of its President, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, in the bank’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. COMMERCIAL EGG PRODUCERS: LESSON TO LEARN FROM INDIA EGG PRODUCERS BY DR. JAMES WAGETI

Image
Around the year 1981, the Indian poultry industry was hit by an unprecedented crises. Over 40 percent of all poultry farmers had stopped operations because the business had become econimically unviable. Middlemen had forced down prices and farmers were being paid less than their production cost, a result of speculative trading, since the existing market and distribution network was working against the interest of the farmers. Feed costs had risen by 250 percent in the past 5 years, whereas egg prices were static. Consumption of eggs was low and the future looked anything but healthy.   My Egg, My Price, My Life ...   With no help coming from any quarter, a group of farmers motivated by Dr. B.V. Rao traveled across the country, organizing over 300 meetings with groups, individuals, and traders. Their objective - unite poultry farmers from all over India, and take control of their own destiny. Dr. Rao's call "My Egg, My Price, My Life" consequently brought farmers onto a un...

Dr. ALAYANDE Gbenga Sunday – ITS TIME TO BE OUR BROTHER’S KEEPER

Image
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, unfortunate things happens. Life is very dicey so if we judge ourselves only by our ability to make things happen progressively, then we will leave a lot of people behind. One of those unfortunate things is the story of one of our colleague that in the past 9 years can barely afford a living. Dr. ALAYANDE, Gbenga Sunday hails from Isin Local Government Area in Kwara State and graduated from the famous Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto 2010 and has being admitted to the profession of Veterinary Medicine. Life hasn’t been so fair on him. Believe me, the veterinary profession still maintains a cadre of progress every one of us should be proud of. However, when things like this happens, saving the face of the profession become a priority. Dr. Alayande is currently living in a ‘bachar’ and was caught contemplating suicide. When things aren't going our direction, a call for help is the mos...
